Introduction

Just as last year I planned on doing a longer tour this summer, but just like that time I ended up almost missing out entirely. I had about a month at my disposal, but ample windows of opportunity weather-wise proved elusive – or, more accurately, ostensibly elusive in advance, but demonstrably suitable after the fact. Still, this was one of those years when spring was late and cold, which would have made earlier starts both snow-ridden and mosquito-replete, especially further north, so even those escaped windows may not have been quite as good as they looked in hindsight.

As for destinations, I once again turned my eyes towards Sarek and plotted a moderately ambitious tour through the park, but said windows never quite seemed to allow for it to come to fruition, with heavy rains, strong winds and/or low temperatures appearing at precisely the wrong points in forecasts. Ultimately I had little choice but to look at Jämtland this year as well, despite really wanting to go further this time around, but what can you do?

In the end I settled upon another attempt at visiting the parallel valleys of Lunndörrsfjällen, something I had tried to do before and considered doing on several occasions since. Finally, right at the end of my vacation, the weather started to pick up and the forecasts spoke of more or less promising albeit somewhat unstable conditions, so this being my last chance to get out at all I decided to go for it, come what may.

Since the transportation situation to western Jämtland is still sketchy, my options regarding where, when and how to start the tour were limited. I ended up deciding to go for Issjödalen first, beginning in Vallbo, since the short first stage thereby arising would enable me to use the regular bus tour to Vålådalen on Monday afternoons. This would, however, entail a longer wait in Undersåker, since the train schedule does not match the bus schedule (of course), but it was the best I could do this time.

Here, then, is the full account of what transpired during the subsequent six days. Each section has a header consisting of a short overview of the stage in question, complete with a map showing the route travelled. A ring marks the starting point, a square the lunch break location (if any), and a star the destination. Vertical distances have been calculated from the map and have an accuracy of 10 m. All breakfasts consisted of oatmeal porridge, tea and a sandwich, and all lunches of two cups of instant soup and a sandwich.
