Introduction

Back in the day I had a habit, of sorts, of doing a shorter springtime tour with a light pack in my back yard, the fjelds of Jämtland, often (but not always) during the Easter holiday. This practice I had, for various reasons (excuses, excuses), not followed since 2013, but as the forecasts of the approaching Easter grew steadily better I was of a mind to resume it this year. The fact that we were having the best winter in years was also a contributing factor, meaning that all options route-wise were open.

The transportation situation to Vålådalen is still less than optimal, so I drew up a couple of different plans, all involving Vålådalen, Stensdalen, my favorite Gåsen, and Storulvån. In the end circumstances conspired to make me decide to start in Storulvån on Maundy Thursday and end in Vålådalen on the following Saturday, whereby I hoped to get ahead of the larger crowds who, unlike me, would not have been able to get said Thursday off from work.

My packing list was as follows:

Add to that half a liter of warm water in the thermos, and half of liter of cold water in a flask carried in one of the jacket's chest pockets.

One point of worry was the steel edge that broke during my last New Year's tour, but after close inspection of the afflicted ski I decided that it was likely to function in a passable manner for the duration of this short tour, especially if I took care not to exert undue force on the flawed side.

Here, then, is the account of what transpired during the subsequent three days. Each section has a header consisting of a short overview of the stage in question, complete with a map showing the route travelled. A ring marks the starting point, a square the lunch break location, and a star the destination. Vertical distances have been calculated from the map and have an accuracy of 10 m. All cottage breakfasts consisted of oatmeal porridge, tea and a sandwich, and all lunches of two cups of instant soup and a sandwich.
