Monday 1/9
Ábeskoeatnu
I woke up somewhat earlier than expected, but did not move until 08:15. Outside my window the new day was come with pretty fair weather, but also with a certain wind. I packed about halfway and then walked over to the main building where I had a substantial breakfast now that I could, during which I ran into my Kårsavagge roommate. On the other side of the walls clouds were hanging around all peaks in sight except for Šloahtta and Njullá – once again in keeping with the Abisko effect – and the wind had a distinct chill to it.
After breakfast I went back to Keron to clean my room, and then I returned the key and stuffed my stuff into the baggage room before going out on a walk. I strolled along Rallarvägen (Navvy Road) to the impressive canyon of Ábeskoeatnu, where I tried my hand at arty photography. I proceeded to the other side just as the sun broke through, walking slowly along the path down to the bridge some distance downstream. Now it was really getting warm, and I removed my jacket before starting upwards on the other side, which landed me in the middle of the cabins-for-rent belonging to the tourist station.
This I entered after circling back beside the car road, and went into the library room again. No more had I done so than the day's newspapers were brought in, so I read through a couple of them. The weather was improving all the while, although on the other side of the lake clouds were gathering afresh, and the wind remained. A bit later I walked over to Keron to prepare a mobile lunch, after which I retrieved my things from the baggage room and left for the train station. The train arrived on time, but as usual fell behind schedule in short fashion, and it was only just that I met my connection in Gällivare; I was to pay a visit to my grandmother in Jokkmokk on my way home, extending this latest most satisfactory visit to Lapland a little bit longer.
