Sunday 1/8 – part one

Last nice morning

I slept soundly until 7-ish and remained in bed for about half an hour longer. The sky was clear towards the south, but in the other direction the clouds were thick, and there was a fair southwesterly wind blowing. The Pole had already left, and the Swede said he was staying, so there would be no one to carry my statistics letter faster than I could bring it myself. And speaking of carrying, my shoulder was feeling much better, so the prospect of donning a full pack again was not ominous.

After having a somewhat late breakfast I completed my food pack, finishing the last cheese precisely, and then continued packing. I wrote a list of nota bene items for my successor and then went up to talk with the tenting woman. According to her the train would only stop in Katterat if someone had made a reservation, which was kind of a blow to my plans since I had none, but I figured I could call the train company (or have someone else do it) once I acquired a singal, which I knew would be possible along the way. Looking inside I realized that the other Swede must have left anyway, for the room he had occupied was cleared out. I collected various papers and then made a garbage round, fixing some stuff out in the storage room, and then set about cleaning out the warden's cottage.

After cleaning the floors properly I began carrying my remaining things up to the main cottage as the woman left. When I was nearly done three people came from the east – and this turned out to be the company of Gustav, my successor. He and his group had spent the night in a tent some kilometers off, not quite having had the time or energy to reach Unna Allakas the day before. I talked some with him outside his home-to-be and then carried the last batch up, going through it all. After some more introductory remarks Gustav's party went down to the warden's cottage, and I sat down for lunch in the upper one.

I then went through the economic side of things, and having found everything in perfect order I went down to Gustav to talk about his job some more. Meanwhile two new campers came, and after showing them where to pitch their tent I went back up and wrote my monetary report. Gustav then came in, and we sat down to go over the map inconsistencies I had discovered. When that was done I packed up, and then we went for a little tour of the rest of the place, and I related the last pieces of information I had in mind. By then it had grown cloudy, but it was warm enough, so I chose light clothing. Having said a last goodbye I then put on the rucksack and left Unna Allakas behind shortly before 14:30.
