Introduction
Since I had no warden assignment this year, I as usual aimed for a tour of my own sometime during August. Also as somewhat usual, weather conditions turned out to be fickle, and I drew up and discarded many a plan of varying ambition in multiple locations. Finally, though, as the last week of my vacation approached, the weather appeared to stabilize, providing a much longed-for window.
By that time I had centered on the Jämtland/Härjedalen fjelds, due to both time constraints and continued difficulties with the more northern trains. I had gotten it into my mind that I wanted to revisit Helags, where I hadn't been for 15 years – and never in summer. This also went through several "well, maybe" permutations until I landed on a plan which I felt fairly enthusiastic about, and following some final decisions I was to start from Ljungdalen after spending a night at the hostel there.

Plus the 500-g birch walking stick, half a liter of hot water in the thermos, and some cold water in the flask. Also note that I consumed one breakfast at the hostel in Ljungdalen before leaving, so the actual starting weight was slightly lower.
Here, then, is the full account of what transpired during the subsequent five days. Each section has a header consisting of a short overview of the stage in question, complete with a map showing the route travelled. A ring marks the starting point, a square the lunch break location (if any), and a star the destination. Vertical distances have been calculated from the map and have an accuracy of 10 m. All breakfasts consisted of oatmeal porridge, tea and a sandwich, and all lunches of two cups of instant soup and a sandwich.
